F5 Weekly Update 5th February 2020

Blameless, through Jesus – life conforming to the cross.

Lord, we thank you. Help us to hear. We come as we are. Gill Varcoe shared from the bible readings of the day, declaring that we boast in the Lord and what He has done on the cross. We see in our culture that we boast in academic intelligence, celebrity, but the Gospel presents a counter-culture of the Kingdom of God – we boast in the Lord, who destroys the wisdom of the wise and frustrates the intelligence of the intelligent. The Hebrews, in their pride, visualised in their own minds a Messiah that would give them supremacy over all, as they once had. They had no thought about the Messiah achieving God’s purposes by hanging on a cross. How foolish, having pride in our own efforts – God has a better way, so let Jesus deal with it. Let God work in us, with what He has put in us, and He will go on working through us. In Psalm 15, there is a list of things we do that but a barrier between us and God. But in humbly accepting what Jesus has done for us in reconciling us to God, we are blameless. With receiving the Holy Spirit, our lives will conform to the cross. Through God, in what we do – willingness, sacrifice, giving, loving, despite the situations or circumstances. Matthew 5:1-12 – the beatitudes – Jesus teaches the characteristics, with the enabling of the Holy Spirit, and the results – “dwelling with the Lord in His sacred tent, living on His Holy Mountain”. Resist the culture of the world and what the world dictates. Promote the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. In Psalm 15, we are guilty and not acceptable. Through Jesus, we are blameless and acceptable. Become more like Jesus through the power of the cross. Be forgiven. Happy are those who know Jesus Christ.

We put these in each week to remind you of the ways you can practically pray for our fellow members of F5 and our wider community.

Time of Prayer – from Bishop Mark Short
Lord of all days and years, and time and eternity, You made this land and have blessed us with its riches and beauty. You are a refuge to all who seek your shelter, our strong defence in trial and tribulation. Send rain we pray to extinguish flames and heal our land. Mercifully protect life and property. Give help and hope to our neighbours assailed by fire. Comfort and provide for those who grieve. Uphold those who suffer loss, Give peace and hope to those bewildered and broken-hearted. We thank you for men and women of courage and selflessness.
We thank you for brave communities of care and support, We thank you for those who share your comfort and hope, We thank you for those at a distance giving and praying.
Lord, you sent your Son so that we would know your power to save, your presence with your people in this world of turmoil, and your promise to renew the whole creation. Please help us to humble ourselves and pray and seek Your face and to turn from our wicked ways and turn our hearts to you, that we may have faith for this day and hope for eternity.
We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
