As the world lives, or live by the Spirit.
In Psalm 119: 1-8, 1 Corinthians 3 :1-9 and Matthew 5: 21-37, we are given two perspectives on living; the way of the world, or live in the Spirit. Sally draw a similarity between the Psalm passage and the Beatitudes in Matthew 5: 1-12 we had last week. The world does not pour accolades or blessings on the people who are blameless, walk according to the law of the Lord, keep His statutes, seek Him with all their heart, do no wrong, follow His ways, or fully obey His precepts. However, these are the characteristics the God sees, in the heart of each of us, and blesses. The reality is expressed by St. Paul to the Corinthians, and by Jesus in the sermon on the mount, the other two passages. Psalm 119: 1-8, is a window into how it would be in God’s Kingdom, living by the Spirit. We can’t possible “get there” by ourselves; we need the Holy Spirit. God’s Kingdom is about what God is doing, not use doing to make it happen. In working in our own strength as humans, we have a disconnect from God, and what ever we do will never be enough. With the Holy Spirit, worldly walking becomes less whilst walking with Kingdom values through Jesus Christ becomes more. Now, there may appear to be a lot of rules or laws, but a closer look we can see that these rules are set for our protection and guidance, not to limit us. Sally referred to the Ten Commandments; the first three are about our relationship with God, the other seven about our relationship with each other. In damaging or breaking our relationships with others, then we break our relationship with God. Settle differences quickly and be reconciled with others, and with God. Don’t play around with bringing gifts and service to God, if there are unresolved matters between another; it is a worldly gesture, no acceptable to God. Broken relationships have poor consequences, restored relationships brings reconciliation and restoration. Psalm 119: 8 “I will obey your decrees, do not utterly forsake me” is a heart cry by the Psalmist, who acknowledges he needs God to help him do what needs to be done. In Corinthians, Paul says it is God who makes things grow. There is a place in God’s Kingdom for each of us, through Christ crucified, which brings reconciliation to God the Father, and with others. Live in grace, with the Spirit of God, and other will see the Kingdom of God.
